I have been reading a lot into McKee's book, Story, and am finding it to be extremely useful.
Although it doesn't relate directly to documentary, it is a lesson in narrative and structure and gives various methods of constructing a story. I find McKee's methods more flexible than Vogler's and find it to be an interesting read.
Some quotes that have stuck out so far and may relate to the methods I would like to employ within my documentary, are:
A story that either skips helter-skelter through time or so blurs temporal continuity tha the audience cannot sort out what happens before and after is told in NON LINER TIME> (P 51)
I find this quote quite interesting as I have been trying to define this method for myself and place it with other films I have seem, such as Donnie Darko and Eternal SUnshine of the Spotless mind. I think these structures have a much more interesting, though t provoking structure and would like to investigate if this can be employed when filming a documentary.
It has helped me understand where certain messages through a film or doc should be placed and why, and the outcome of swapping the placement of these messages.
